In the heart of the mythical Elqui Valley in Pisco, surrounded by the Andes Mountains, 500km north of Santiago in central Chile, lies a magical place that allows for star-spangled dreams beneath the clear pure sky. Combining stargazing and specialized astronomic tours with night-time horseback riding, meditation and even tarot readings, Elqui Domos is a hotel quite like no other.

It was completed in 2005 to fulfil its owners’ desire to observe and enjoy the grandeur of the one of the world’s most star-filled skies. It is one of only seven astronomic hotels around the world and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere, offering breathtaking views of the magic skies draped over the Elqui Valley (the valley is renowned for its sharp, clear skies, as it happens to sit under one of the clearest atmospheres in the world). The lack of rain and pleasant weather all year round set the perfect conditions for astronomic tourism, where guests can gather to enjoy a unique chance to liaise with the stars.

Today is the birthday of American photographer Sally Mann. Born in Lexington, Virginia in 1951, Mann is known for her black and white photographs of children and landscapes. Her passion for photography began while she was attending college, motivated by her desire to be in the darkroom with her then boyfriend. During this time, her first photograph debuted, a nude of a fellow classmate. Mann’s interest in nudes would extend to her first photography books, in which she photographed adolescent girls, often times in the nude. The books were not without their share of controversy, with accusations of child pornography running rampant which Mann dismissed stating the photographs were “natural through the eyes of a mother, since she has seen her children in every state: happy, sad, playful, sick, bloodied, angry and even naked.”

In the 1990’s, Mann began to photograph landscapes and decomposing bodies in a study of the nature of death and decay. Throughout her career, Mann has employed a 100 year old 8 x 10 Bellows camera with 8 x 10 wet plate collodion glass negatives as a medium. Her current projects are a series of self portraits, and an intimate look into her married life with her new book “Marital Trust”.
